Here is the start of our new website, for The Foundation, Michaels Helping Hands.

Foundation Update

Update status on our foundation in Mike Chaloupka's name. The foundation name is, Michael's Helping Hands, Foundation. Name is registered and now the waiting game for the government to approve it. Already getting junk mail, that did not take long. It is hard to believe, that almost 5 years ago that we would have a foundation in his name. Can't wait for it to be approved, we will then be able to donate to a few great causes, that Mike loved. Also working on a website, facebook page, and our yearly fundraiser.

Foundation for Mike

The first step is finalized in starting our own foundation for Mike Chaloupka, our beloved son. Michael's Helping Hands Foundation, Inc, I want to send a big thank you for Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, for helping us. We just decided it was time to take the big step. Watch for a website, coming soon for The Foundation.

Donations

I am in the process of working on getting donations for the silent auction. So far we have gotten donations from Circus World, Comedy Sportz, and UWM Panthers (2 shirts and a backpack). My goal is to work on getting more donations, from new places.

Nonprofit 501c3 for MJC Memorial

We are busy working on nonproft status 501c3. Our next step is setting up our board of directors. If you are interested in being on the board, please let us know. Thanks to a friend for suggested us go to non profit center in Milwaukee, for help.

2013 MJC Memorial Craft Fair

We just received the first application from a vendor for this years show. The applications will go out within the next week. The applications are also available online http://creativetouchcrafts.net/craftfair.html

Donations

The craft fair we held in honor of Mike Chaloupka. I would like to thank all the shoppers, shoppers, and a craft vendors that helped make this a success. We were able to donate $1400.00 to Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. Next year Intervarsity is working on building a walkway for individuals in a wheelchair, at Cedar Campus in Michigan. With funds we have raised over the last 4 years. We are already planning for next years event, in the same location.

MJC Memorial Craft Fair

Now that this years event is over, we are already planning for next year. The dates for next years MJC Memorial Craft Fair is September 20-21. We are still collecting money from the silent auction. I hope by the end of this month, we have everything wrapped up. Thanks to everyone that helped out in one way or another.

MJC Memorial Craft Fair 3rd Annual

This years craft fair is well underway, with only about 2 weeks away. If you would like to bid on some of the silent auction items, they are available at We have more than 50 items up for bid, and more items are still arriving for the silent auction. Mike's Garden

Here are a few news things that we added to Mike's Garden. Mosaic solar lights,solar gazing ball, and a plaque that our daughter gave to us. Also a cross the we mounted the plaque to.

Here is a few pictures of Mike's garden. The plants are starting to bloom. We try and add something new each year. We will have a new item, hopefully next week.

Intersection-Stop lights

This is the intersection where Mike was hit, this is what it looks like today. The good news is, students are using the intersection to cross the street. I hope that no one else gets hit there. It is such a busy street with loads of students crossing the street daily.

Construction protects students from harm

The intersection of Main and Whiton Streets is finally getting a stoplight. The construction started last week and the pedestrian yield sign that previously hung over Main Street will be replaced.

Anyone who used the crosswalk knows how dangerous crossing the street was. For whatever reason, cars didn’t adhere to the crosswalk and ignored pedestrians even though many pedestrians pushed the button that activated the yield sign’s flashing yellow lights.

Three years ago, former UW-Whitewater student Michael Chaloupka was killed after being struck by a car in the crosswalk; the city has been trying to get funding for the construction ever since. Last March, another student was hit by a car while trying to cross the same intersection.

It is puzzling why drivers continue to cruise past the crosswalk with minimal concern for those on foot. A student had pressed the button, which activated the blinking yield sign.

After waiting several seconds and still not having any cars slow down, the student stepped into the road tentatively. As the student crossed the first lane, the traffic in lanes two, three and four continued to cruise along without slowing down. This pattern continued as the dangerous journey across the road was completed.

This dangerous game is eerily similar to Frogger, except the consequences of losing are more sinister. College campuses are teaming with students on foot, and drivers should be taking caution with that in mind.

While some drivers may argue that pedestrians dart out from a crosswalk sometimes, being aware of the crosswalk is the driver’s responsibility. Once the construction is complete, which is expected to be sometime in early November, pedestrians will be safer.

This time the government saved the day. While we often criticize the government for things like taxes, politicians not keeping promises or failing to fix the economy, we must remind that they help us out, too.

On average, a pedestrian is injured in a traffic accident every eight minutes according to the National Highway Traffic Association. With this statistic in mind, use caution when crossing the street. If a student gets hit by a car, it does not mean they will get free tuition. If you are driving, make sure you are looking for pedestrians, especially when driving near a college campus such as UW-Whitewater.

Pedestrians must take caution while crossing the street and drivers must watch out for their fellow classmates while driving around the city. After all, pedestrians are vulnerable.

There’s a reason they look both ways.

2nd Annual MJC Memorial Craft Fair

It has been a really crazy year, but we are now working on planning the 2nd Annual Fundraiser. We are now accepting applications for crafters and artists, and working on securing donations for the silent auction. We sent out 50 letters for donations and they are starting to come in. If you would like to donation anything, please let me know.
